The San Francisco 49ers will place a second claim for defensive end Takk McKinley, who went back on the waiver wire after failing his physical with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 49ers' placed a waiver claim before Week 10, but Cincinnati was higher on the order than San Francisco. The Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns placed claims, too.

Takk McKinley's season has been plagued by a groin injury and subsequent falling out with the Atlanta Falcons, prompting his release on Nov. 9.

In the wake of McKinley's failed physical, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media on Tuesday that his team would once again vie for the 25-year old pass rusher.

“I was told today that Takk failed his physical and I know we put in a claim last time,” Shanahan said, via Niners Wire. “So, I don’t think that’s until tomorrow at 1:00, but I know we plan on putting another claim in.”

The 49ers (4-6) are now 12th in the waiver order, well ahead of the Browns (6-3) and Raiders (6-3).

Initially, Shanahan said he was unaware of the team's plans to pursue Takk McKinley, though it's highly probable that the coach was downplaying his team's interest in McKinley once he got word that Cincinnati had placed a claim.

“I don’t think we put it in the claim for him,” Shanahan said last week, via Niners Wire. “I know that we were behind a number of people. I’m assuming that he went to some people, but yeah, it’s always tough when you’re in the situation that we’re in, but you can make things work and move some things around, but I don’t think we’re going that direction.”

Takk McKinley has 17.5 sacks since being drafted no. 26 overall by the Falcons in 2017.

San Francisco has been looking for reinforcements on the defensive line since Dee Ford and Nick Bosa went down with long-term injuries in the first two weeks. The 49ers have been relying on Arik Armstead, Kerry Hyder Jr., Jordan Willis, and Dion Jordan as their primary defensive ends.
