Houston Texans defensive star Jadeveon Clowney is presumed to be in talks with his current team in regards to a contract extension going forward. The speculation is that Clowney will be placed under a franchise tag and there most likely will not be any kind of long-term contract extension.

According to Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report, the San Francisco 49ers should place themselves as the front-runners to make a move for Clowney as they are in desperate need of a pass rush.

“The 49ers will have a projected $59 million in cap space in 2019. They won't have as much cash as the Colts, who can go all-in for Demarcus Lawrence if he hits the open market, but it's enough to lure a proven commodity to San Francisco.”

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports breaks down Clowney's skill set and what he brings to any team that shows interest in him going forward.

“The Texans officially list Clowney as a linebacker in their materials and the NFL's official game books list him each week as a linebacker on the playing-time report. However, in the system that can be fluid and in an era of hybrid defenders moving around on the edge, Clowney will maintain he is more of a defensive end.”

Clowney is an explosive player and will likely get a nice paycheck from a team in need of some pass rush help. The former number one overall pick is a great complement to a talented Houston defense, but he will likely demand a lot of money or at least a long-term contract. Clowney's injury history may prove to be costly going forward, but he has been a stud defensive player when on the field.
