The San Francisco 49ers employ arguably the best tight end in the NFL in George Kittle, but the team is looking to find a backup to Kittle. According to Forbes' Vincent Frank, San Francisco has expressed interest in trading for New York Giants tight end Evan Engram.

Kittle has solidified himself as the best overall tight end in the NFL in recent years. Even though Kittle is entering the final year of his rookie contract, the 49ers plan on giving him an extension in the near future.

On the other hand, San Francisco would like to find someone that can be a threat behind Kittle on the depth chart. With that in mind, it was reported earlier this offseason that the Giants could trade Engram this offseason.

Engram was New York's first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. In his first season with the Giants, Engram hauled in 64 passes for 722 yards and six touchdowns. However, in his past two seasons, he's dealt with multiple injuries, missing 13 games as a result.

Due to the injuries, Engram has seen his production take a slight decline in the past two seasons. Despite his injury concerns, the 49ers could be a team that is willing to surrender a mid-round pick for Engram. Of course, it remains to be seen what the Giants would want in return for Engram if they are willing to trade him.

Above all, if a team acquired Engram, they would have a chance to pick up his fifth-year option in 2021. Whether they trade for Engram or not, the 49ers are keen on adding another tight end this offseason.
