Having only played about 19 minutes in one of the last five games for the New York Knicks, Enes Kanter could be on his way to a new team. He held nothing back when asked about his absence from the action, essentially asking to be traded for an opportunity to play elsewhere.

It is an odd year for the rebuilding New York Knicks. As the Feb. 7 NBA Trade Deadline nears, the Knicks have the coming offseason in mind when making moves right now. Hopefully able to use their cap space to bring a big-name star to Madison Square Garden, as well as re-sign injured big man Kristaps Porzingis, New York is looking to avoid taking on money in addition to shedding as much salary as possible.

With Enes Kanter still able to provide value for teams with playoff hopes, despite being a one-year rental, the Knicks have some options in dealing him. Here are a few trades that could see the disgruntled center setting up shop with a new team, as well as the New York not having to move away from their long-term plans:

New York Knicks receive: Michael Beasley, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Los Angeles Lakers receive: Enes Kanter

This would be an interesting trade because the Lakers are in a similar position financially. With aspirations to play a big role in free agency this summer, taking on salary beyond this season is out of the question for Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka. However, that could make this a mutually beneficial trade for both sides.

The Lakers are able to send out two expiring deals to New York in order to match salaries, keeping the Knicks flexible moving forward. Kanter could be the lead center for the Lakers, who have relied on a group effort from multiple players so far this season. While he would likely sit in favor of Tyson Chandler or Javale McGee when Luke Walton wants to trot out a defensive lineup, Kanter could add another reliable bucket fetcher to the Lakers roster, which the team could definitely use at time.

This would also free up a roster spot for the Lakers without having to cut any players on a guaranteed contract. In other words- welcome to L.A., Melo.

New York Knicks receive: Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala

Philadelphia 76ers receive: Enes Kanter, Noah Vonleh

This trade could check two boxes for Elton Brand and the Sixers that have been a part of recent rumors. Philadelphia has recently expressed interest in trading for Noah Vonleh and have also been looking for another center.

Noah Vonleh would be a great stretch big and reliable shooter for Philadelphia. Kanter wouldn’t provide the same in regard to shooting but would be an obvious upgrade over Mike Muscala. Kanter would also give the team a little extra depth and ability to get some scoring from the bench. A pairing of T.J. McConnell and Kanter could make for a deadly second unit, giving them an extra edge in the playoffs.

Knicks, David Fizdale, Enes Kanter, Thunder

Obviously, for a team that already has a lot of personality in the locker room, adding someone like Kanter could be touchy, but may prove to be worth the risk.

New York Knicks receive: Zach Randolph

Sacramento Kings receive: Enes Kanter

With rumors popping up earlier this month about this potential deal, now may be the perfect time for both teams to pick the phone back up and make it happen. The premise of the deal is obvious. Randolph has yet to play a minute and the tanking Knicks could keep him benched or play him as desired and continue to lose as they dream about what jersey number to give Zion Williamson. The Sacramento Kings are set to make the playoffs for the first time since before De’Aaron Fox attended middle school and could use any extra talent they can get their hands on.

Despite having a loaded frontcourt rotation, Kanter would help bring a veteran presence to the young Kings locker room and some playoff experience he accrued recently while playing with the Thunder. If the deal needed some sweetening, returning Iman Shumpert and his expiring contract to New York and bringing Courtney Lee to Sacramento could do the trick. The Knicks would wash away a little extra salary and the Kings could improve the roster a little. This could be a textbook win-win.

mario hezonja, enes kanter

New York Knicks receive: Marcin Gortat, Luc Mbah a Moute

Los Angeles Clippers receive: Enes Kanter

The Clippers are another of the teams on the short list of expected spenders in free agency and would like to keep it that way. However, they are also in position to make the most with a roster that has brought them into playoff contention before many of them hit the open market. In hopes to put together a solid playoff run (and show potential signees that success in L.A. isn’t just for the Lakers), they could look to trade up and still retain all their cap flexibility.

Swapping Enes Kanter for Gortat is a no-brainer for Los Angeles. Trading away Mbah a Moute would be interesting, though. He hasn’t played much for the team (only four games this season), but just left former first seed Houston Rockets last summer in favor of returning to playing for Doc Rivers. Stranger things have happened though, and this Clippers franchise has pulled off much, much more savage moves. A tandem of Enes Kanter and Boban Marjanovic could be a tough guard for some of the Western Conference playoff centers, making this trade at least worth consideration for the Clips.

CP

New York receives: DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, Salah Mejri

Dallas Mavericks receive: Enes Kanter, Tim Hardaway Jr., Emmanuel Mudiay

DeAndre Jordan has been an interesting addition for the Mavericks this season. Despite giving some solid production at times, the pairing definitely hasn’t gone the way the Dallas front office had hoped and his time with the team in all likelihood will be over after this season. The Mavericks still have big playoff hopes, however, and want to build the best team they can around Luka Doncic as quickly as they can.

This trade could offer a lot for both teams. Tim Hardaway is the most expensive player on the Knicks roster moving forward and moving him would mean everything to New York. Finding him a new home, especially without having to give up assets to do so would be a prime opportunity.

Dallas would get another scorer on the roster that they could pair with Luka long-term. Emmanuel Mudiay, who is having a great season, would give them some help at the point after losing J.J. Barea for the season. All in all, this could be a great chance for Dallas to round out their roster for this season without sacrificing much opportunity for the future as well. Meanwhile, New York clears a ton of space and takes back only expiring deals.
