The New Orleans Saints history wasn't too rich early on, but they have made up for that the last couple of decades. This has been a franchise that has dealt with a lot of gloom, but they have also found recent success. From the Saints bringing in quarterback Drew Brees to winning a Super Bowl, there have been a lot of big moments.

But which one is the best? Let's take a look at the five greatest moments in Saints history.

5. Tom Dempsey from 63 yards

Tom Dempsey is one of the greatest kickers in NFL history and his 63-yard kick was one of the greatest moments in Saints history. Back in 1970 against the Detroit Lions, Dempsey kicked a game-winner from 63 yards out. Making a 63-yard field goal is impressive in itself, but even more impressive considering Dempsey only had half a foot.

Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot or fingers on his right hand. At the time, the 63-yard field goal was an NFL record. It has since been broken by Jason Prater, ironically enough, for the Detroit Lions.

4. Tracy Porter Picks off Brett Favre

The Minnesota Vikings and the Saints faced off in the 2009 NFC Championship game with a trip to a Super Bowl on the line. Brett Favre was driving the Vikings down the field and it looked like the Vikings might score and advance to the Super Bowl, but Saints cornerback Tracy Porter had different ideas.

With 19 seconds left in the game, Porter stepped in front of a Favre pass intended for Sidney Rice and intercepted it. Instead of the Vikings kicking a winning field goal, the game went to overtime. The Saints ultimately won the game and advanced to the Super Bowl.

3. Porter Picks off Peyton Manning

Two weeks later, the Saints had a meeting with Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. Manning was driving the Colts down the field, and it looked like the Saints might be in line for heartbreak. Manning tried to find Reggie Wayne, but Porter picked the ball off and he was off to the races.

Porter returned it for a touchdown, and the rest was history, with the Saints winning their first Super Bowl, 31-17.

2. Steve Gleason: The Man

The greatest single play in Saints history was Steve Gleason's blocked punt in Week 3 of the 2006 season. This was the first game back at the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, a sign of hope for the city of New Orleans. In just the fourth play of the game, Steve Gleason blocked a Falcons punt and returned it for a touchdown. That wound up the crowd for the rest of the game, and it seemed to finally be a sign of a life for a city that was hurting so badly.

There is a statue of Gleason blocking the punt outside of the Superdome, commemorating how important of a play it was in Saints history.

1. Signing Drew Brees

The Saints signing Drew Brees at the time was a risk because of his shoulder, but it's the roster move that changed the entire outlook of the franchise. Since Brees has come on board, the Saints have been a playoff contender every year. The quarterback also led them to the Super Bowl during the 2009 season.

The Saints used to be a laughing stock in the NFL  but since Brees has been under center, everything has changed. It has become a desired destination for free agents. Once Brees retires, he's a lock not just for the Pro Football Hall of Fame but also to be considered the best quarterback in Saints history.
