At long last, the trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy”, starring LeBron James, dropped on Saturday morning. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar shared the Spring Hill Co. production on Twitter:

We've gleaned information about the latest Space Jam installment (not a sequel) in the “Looney Tunes Basketball Movie” genre  — including an in-depth first-look by EW last month, which revealed the movie's outrageous premise:

“Playing a heightened version of himself, James struggles (in Space Jam) to relate to Dom [his son], who's much more interested in creating games than playing them. When Dom's tech skills draw the attention of a CGI humanoid named Al G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), the father-son duo get sucked into the Warner 3000 entertainment “Server-verse,” with the A.I. kidnapping Dom in the hopes of stealing some of the King's followers.

To save his son and escape this virtual reality, James must round up the Tunes, including a banished Bugs, to defeat the formidable Goon Squad.”

We also learned the Space Jam flick would be dropping in theaters and HBO Max on July 16 — six days before Game 7 of the NBA Finals. We learned the movie — directed by Malcolm Lee and produced by Ryan Coogler — was filmed over two summers, and that James continued Michael Jordan's legacy of hosting star-studded scrimmages on the Warner Bros. lot.

The “New Legacy” trailer gives the Internet its first real look at the long-gestating Space Jam project. Here are five other things we learned.

1) LeBron is (literally) Super-teaming, once again

“It's one of the biggest games, if not the biggest game, I've ever played in,” James said about this latest Space Jam production, via EW. “The Goon Squad is probably the best team ever assembled in basketball history.”

Clearly (actually, nothing is clear about any of this), James feels like he needs some upgrades in his rotation in Space Jam. Yosemite Sam and Foghorn Leghorn can get you by the Sacramento Kings in February, but not the Goon Squad with the fate of James' son on the line.

In the Space Jam trailer, GM LeBron can be seen assembling his own list of Avengers. In this case, instead of Marvel/Disney characters, he's limited to the WarnerMedia catalog. He goes with Superman, Gandalf (LOL but smart), King Kong (fresh off his battle with Godzilla), and the Iron Giant, for now.

Jordan defenders and Skip Bayless, rejoice. After all, MJ beat the Monstars with Newman from Seinfeld and Tweety playing in key moments.

Once again, prime buyout candidates are flocking to LeBron, much to the chagrin of the small-market execs at rival studios.

2) Lola Bunny > Dwyane Wade

Lola is far and away the second-best Looney hooper in Space Jam. Like Wade, she's an elite wing-rabbit to LeBron. In fact, she even re-created Wade and James' most iconic alley-oop connection during the Miami Heat days.

3) Is that…Goon Squad Klay Thompson emerging from a pit of fire in Space Jam?

Yes. Yes it is.

He'll be joined in Space Jam by WNBA legend Diana Taurasi, James' real-life teammate, Anthony Davis, and Portland Trail Blazers Damian Lillard on the Goon Squad.

According to Lillard, his role in Space Jam will be “significant.”

Taurasi was a close friend of the late Kobe and Giannia Bryant. She's also the most cold-blooded person to ever hoop — on the level of Bryant and Jordan. Aptly, Kobe nicknamed her the “White Mamba.”

In a clever bit of character construction, Taurasi's avatar in Space Jam seems to be a nod to the moniker Bryant gave her.

Similarly, Goon Klay's flames imply that he might heat up rather quickly from the perimeter in Space Jam.

4) “Sick references, bro.”

“What in the Matrix hell is this?” LeBron wonders before being plunged into the Warner 3000 Server-verse. Throughout his journey to win a basketball game and rescue his son — and learn a few things about life and parenting along the way — James (and the Space Jam audience) will encounter a slew of characters and images from Warner Bros. properties, dating back to Old Hollywood.

In addition to the aforementioned Matrix and his Superteammates (on that note: Neo at two-guard!), nods to Scooby-Doo, Game of Thrones, It, A Clockwork Orange(!), The Flintstones, Space Ghost(!) and more can be easily identified in the Space Jam trailer.

5) Space Jam Question: Where is Bill Murray?

Murray provided memorable comic relief in the first Space Jam movie (“Larry's not white, Larry's clear“). He also brought some clutch play-making skills in the final moments, when he showed up just in time to help lead the game-winning fast break.

Personally, I will be rooting for an out-of-nowhere “DUH-DUH-DUH-DUH-DUH-DUH-DUHHHH!” from Murray to occur at some point in the movie, perhaps just when the going gets rough for the Toon Squad.

Or, for this to happen in Space Jam:

The wonder of cinema, blended with the chaos of the Internet and the stakes and team-building challenges of a basketball game. And Don Cheadle.
