One of the biggest rising problems that the NBA encountered this past regular season was teams electing to rest their star players in bunches on multiple occasions.

This has prompted commissioner Adam Silver to consider taking some action toward stopping the growing trend. During a recent interview with Marc Stein of ESPN, Silver discussed this very topic in further depth while revealing the large amount of complexity to it all.

“We’re not ready to go there yet. We had a conference call with the competition committee earlier today, and as I had said the other day, where we’re heading is the adoption of a set of guidelines that will be in place for next season which will strongly recommend that the extent players are rested, they’re rested at home and teams not rest multiple starters on the same night. Let's see how that plays out.

I'm reluctant to get into the business of directing these great coaches on minutes because as you know players are often injured during the season but not to the point where they otherwise can't play but maybe shouldn't play then it's a function of league doctors and team doctors on how healthy a player is on whether it's appropriate that a player plays tonight. I would like to come up with a system that relies on the good faith of our teams.”

It's quite a complicated topic with many different factors that make it hard to truly assess. Silver understands that rest is needed throughout the season, but the use of resting multiple star players on the same night only hurts the entertainment factor when it occurs.

The fact that the top teams in the league are going this route only makes this a more prevalent issue. If they are in turn penalized for it in a way that it cause teams to second guess it, this will lead to a significantly decreased use of it.

However, this has put Silver in a difficult position of trying to find a way of implementing it without it getting too overly complicated. Once team doctors get involved, then more issues could arise in the process. It's a hard situation to get a handle on, but Silver appears ready to tackle it head on over the offseason.
