NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has previously said that teams should go to the White House if invited, and while he remains firm about his belief, he expressed his disappointment after US President Donald Trump withdrew his invitation to the Golden State Warriors.

Trump recently announced that he'd no longer invite the Warriors following Stephen Curry's comments about the White House visit. During Golden State's Media Day, Curry said he would vote “no” when they meet as a group to decide whether the team will do the traditional champions' trip to Washington or not. Apparently, that's no longer necessary.

Silver felt it was unfortunate the visit will no longer take place, citing that it would have been a “rare opportunity” for the players.

“I was in favor of the team visiting the White House and that it was a rare opportunity for these players to share their views directly with the President. I am disappointed that that will not happen,” Silver said in an official statement.

The NBA Commissioner, however, said he's still “proud” of the players, especially with the active role they are taking to speak out on critical and important matters.

“More importantly, I am proud of our players for taking an active role in their communities and continuing to speak out on critically important issues,” Silver furthered.

Golden State visited then-president Barack Obama when they won the title in 2015. Nonetheless, with Trump's political views and values clearly not in line with that of several Warriors players', it's no wonder why the team had a hard time deciding.

It remains to be seen what the Warriors will do when they visit Washington in February, though they made it clear in their latest statement that they will use the trip to “celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion.”
