It has been thirteen years since we last heard of Alan Wake. Now, he is making a return. Here are the details for the upcoming Alan Wake 2, including its release date, gameplay, and story.

Alan Wake 2 Release Date: October 27, 2023

Alan Wake 2 comes out on October 27, 2023. The game is available for pre-order on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store. Pre-ordering the game will give players access to the following pre-purchase content:

    • Rocket Flare
    • First Aid Kit
    • Painkillers
    • Coffee Mug Charm
      • This saves Saga from a killing blow once

Originally, the game would be available on October 17, 2023. However, following an announcement from the developers, the game received a release date delay. According to the developers, this was to allow players to “enjoy their favorite games.”

Alan Wake 2 Gameplay

Unlike its predecessor, Alan Wake 2 is a third-person survival horror game. Also unlike the first game, players will play through two single-player stories. This is because the game has two protagonists: the titular Alan Wake, as well as Saga Anderson. Each character has a different story that the player can play in any order. The only set story is for the opening and ending sequences of the game. Players have to play as Saga and Alan respectively.

While exploring the game, players will have to fight against various monsters that want to kill them. Players will have access to various firearms, like revolvers and pistols, to defeat said enemies. They will also have access to a flashlight which, while useful for lighting up the dark environment, also has an effect on enemies. The player can “focus” the flashlight's beam on an enemy. Doing so will make the enemy vulnerable to firearms. The downside of doing this is that it drains the flashlight's battery. Players will have to properly ration their ammunition and batteries, as both are in limited supply.

When not fighting enemies, players will go through the game's detective elements. While playing as Saga, players can pause the game to access her “Mind Palace.” While in the Mind Palace, players will manage a pinboard that they can use to connect clues. This helps in piecing together the game's main mystery. The game also has the manuscript pages feature from the first game, which foreshadows upcoming events in the game.

Alan Wake 2 Story

It has been thirteen years since Alan Wake disappeared, following the events of the first game. Since then, a string of ritualistic murders have occurred in Bright Falls. This is the same town that Alan Wake went to during the events of the first game. To investigate the murders, Saga Anderson, an FBI agent, gets sent to Bright Falls. There, she finds herself tangled in the supernatural horror story that Wake wrote, one that he wrote to escape from his captivity.
