The Utah Jazz announced Tuesday that forward Alec Burks underwent a surgical procedure on his left ankle with no timetable for return.

The 6-foot-6 guard was expected to return this season after having a previous arthroscopic surgery earlier this year.

The progress of his rehab was slow, and the ankle did not improve enough to return to action.

Alec Burks only played 59 games last season and 64 games the year before due to a fractured left fibula and a shoulder injury requiring surgery.

Coach Quin Snyder told reporters the Jazz considered Burks a core player, and hoped he would provide consistent scoring as a sixth man, but injuries have hampered the plan.

“Obviously he was a player we had plans for when we put the team together.”

Last season Burks averaged 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists from the bench.
