It's been a rocky year for everyone but one good thing about the ongoing pandemic is that we all have more time for our games. 2020 saw the rise of fun party games that people can quickly play without too much hassle. Never before has there been a time where people gravitated toward games so much. Steam finally revealed its best-earning games of the year list and it includes the usual assortment of AAA shooters and adventure games. Surprisingly, the year's sleeper hits of Among Us and Fall Guys rank among the year's best-sellers.

Credit where it's due

The release of Steam's Best-Seller list is timely given the ongoing 2020 Steam Winter Sale. Players everywhere get a glimpse into which titles received the most money from rabid fans. The highest tier of the best-selling games includes several older games that continue to enjoy high player counts. Dota 2, CS: GO, GTA V, Monster Hunter: World, Rainbow Six Siege have all earned their spots on the top of this list. They are joined by relatively newer titles such as Red Dead Redemption II and Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2077 landed on the list despite the avalanche of negative press. Undoubtedly, its PC statistics are helped by the fact that most of the game's issues relate to its console ports.

What's most surprising, and refreshing, is the presence of Among Us and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout in the Platinum-tier of Steam's Top Sellers list. This isn't to say that they aren't immensely enjoyable games. It's just great to see that there are finally games on the top of the list that aren't over 40GB in size or take up every square inch of your graphic card's pro.

0cessing power. This list is emblematic of the entirety of the gaming scene in this chaotic year. You still have your heavy-hitters that surprise no one by raking in all the money. However, you also have the simple yet enjoyable games that took the industry and the player base by storm.

BEST SELLING STEAM GAMES 2020

Child-friendly looking characters such as the crewmates from Among Us and the jellybean-men from Fall Guys effectively infiltrated an elite club. Most of the games in the top list of Steam feature hyper-realistic models and anatomically correct humans. No one could have expected the list would include two games with very distinct art styles far removed from their contemporaries.

The numbers don't lie

The end of each year is when most of the gaming award shows take place. Among Us already bagged one big win in the recently-concluded The Game Awards 2020 when it took home Best Mobile Game. It's definitely a massive achievement for any title to win any award from any big award-giving body but the Steam Best-Sellers list offers something else entirely. Game reviewers and award show organizers hand out trophies to some of the year's best titles but it is ultimately the players that decide which titles end up on the Best-Sellers list.

Be it on Steam, or any other digital or physical storefront. The amount of revenue generated by games is entirely fan-driven and is free from any reviewer or organizational influence. Among Us and Fall Guys did not reach the peak of Steam's Top Sellers list by being well-reviewed games. They reached that position, like the other games on the list, by enticing countless players to spend their hard-earned money sheerly through the merit of its gameplay.

Final Words

Currently, the 2020 Steam Winter Sale is in full swing and there are literally over thousands of games being sold at low prices. It's already difficult to sniff out the hidden gems when faced with such a massive array of varying games. Steam's Top Seller list is a great place to start if you have no clue which new games to get.

Obviously, it's unwise to simply go along with the pack but there's a reason why these eleven games stand at the top of the heap. They're immensely enjoyable and people clearly felt that the titles were worth the money. Bear in mind, that most of the games earn their revenue from microtransactions, but that doesn't subtract from their enjoyability.

it's still the height of the holiday season so there's still some time to get some shopping done. Pick up games for yourself or your closest friends and family. Stay home,  stay safe, happy holidays, and happy gaming!
