Although Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani has not had his way at the plate so far in the 2022 campaign, this has been far from the case on the mound.

Ohtani was the star of the show in the Angels’ convincing 8-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, which also helped to clinch Los Angeles the series win.

Ohtani was quite assertive from the opening inning and maintained this approach over the remainder of the contest. He threw 99 total pitches in 7.0 scoreless innings of work, which included 81 total strikes.

The astounding 81 strikes recorded on the day coupled with the 81.8 percent strikeout percentage is a season-high for not only the reigning American League MVP Award winner but also for any starting pitcher so far this season.

Opposing Red Sox hitters simply had little success in hitting off of Ohtani on the day, as the Angels ace notched 11 strikeouts to go along with 29 total swings and misses. More so, Boston’s top three hitters in the lineup  — Trevor Story, Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez  — combined to strike out six times against him.

As it stands through five starts in the season, Ohtani boasts a 3.08 ERA coupled with 41 strikeouts recorded. His next start is currently projected to come on May 11 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
