New friends, returning characters, and cooking fun—here's some of the most exciting things in store for Animal Crossing: New Horizons fans. Announced today in Nintendo's latest Animal Crossing Direct, a huge update is arriving to shake up the hit game on November 5, 2021.

The game last had major changes in March this year, featuring more design slots and customized items. But since then Animal Crossing fans have been clamoring for more updates, but no character, item or even event ever materialized. Now, finally after months, version 2.0 will be arriving in just a few weeks to the Switch-exclusive title.

New Horizons follows the Villager who inhabits an abandoned island alongside other fan-favorites like Isabelle. With the new update, they soon will be joined by more characters, such as Katrina the fortune teller and Harriet the poodle.

Characters returning

Long-time favorite Kapp'n is also returning to the game with this expansion update. An adorable turtle, Kapp'n first featured in Animal Crossing: New Leaf as a boatsman, giving a ride to Tortimer island. In New Horizons, Kapp'n is again escorting players, this time to a new mysterious island destination. Of course, he's also coming back with beautiful songs for fans to enjoy.

Another arrival is Brewster, the quiet coffee-loving pigeon, who is landing in the game alongside The Roost. In previous titles, players could work for Brewster, but exact details have not yet been revealed about what players can do at New Horizons‘ edition of The Roost.

During the Direct, the only option shown was to grab a cup of coffee. Still, it's a refreshing—pun intended—update to the game. Players won't have to enjoy their coffee alone, though. You can invite other characters through their amiibo cards or by using the multiplayer option so friends can come along to The Roost.

Collecting, crops, and cooking

Back in Animal Crossing: City Folk, fans will also remember that Brewster used to store gyroids at The Roost. For newer folk unfamiliar with the gyroids, these are adorable semi-sentient decoration pieces that players can collect. In New Leaf, gyroids were plenty abundant, buried underground like hidden treasure in players' homes rather than The Roost.

They are a staple to the series, and yet New Horizons only has a sole gyroid is called Lloid. As a non-playable character, Lloid collects donations for projects on the island like building ramps or bridges. Now Lloid won't be alone, as Nintendo announced that gyroids will also be making a comeback in the new update.

Besides their strange yet cute appearance, gyroids can play music and can be customized to match your room decorations. What's more, by planting them, players can grow these semi-sentient pieces and create even more gyroids.

But gyroids won't be the only thing that players can enjoy planting, as a new range of crops are also coming to New Horizons. Fans will relish the new feature to plant a variety of vegetables at once, expanding a great deal beyond the pumpkins currently available in the game.

In addition to that, an exciting new feature that's arriving is cooking. Just like building furniture, players will find themselves spending a lot more time with the game, following recipes to make an array of meals.
