The New Orleans Pelicans‘ star Anthony Davis had a successful knee procedure last March and is currently in rehab mode. This has caused him to be one of a handful of players to miss out on representing his country in the coming Rio Olympics.

During the latest NBA A to Z podcast, the three-time all-star told USA TODAY Sports' Nancy Armour that winning a gold medal is his number one priority and his passion for USA basketball is very evident:

“For me, [winning a gold medal is] number one, you don't really get the opportunity to win a gold medal every year, and I'm fortunate to have two: one for the world cup and one for the Olympics.

“Just the feeling of them playing the national anthem and them putting a gold medal around your neck is huge. Not a lot of people get asked to play in the Olympics, so you kind of take that as them telling you ‘we want you, you're one of the best in the league right now,' and I kind of take that with a lot of pride and honor.”

He may not be able to represent the United States this year in Brazil, but at only 23 years old, he still has other chances to compete for a spot with Team USA and his NBA future is shining bright.

For now, his focus is to get back to one-hundred percent and create a winning culture with the lowly Pelicans in the Western Conference.

“We've gotta come out here and play together, play hard,” Davis said. “We lost a couple pieces, but we added a couple pieces as well. I'm excited about this season, and I think we're gonna get back to our playoff ways.”
