A recent Reddit AMA with the developers of Apex Legends revealed interesting information on what they plan for the game's immediate future. Apex Legends‘ community experienced a resurgence in recent weeks, mostly thanks to the well-received Legacy Update and the new Arena Mode. But the return of old players reinvigorated old problems, one of which is the issue of expensive cosmetics.

During the AMA, one of the Reddit users asked the devs about their cosmetics. The comment by x5hadau reads:

“I get that you gotta make the game profitable, but there's gotta be a way to prevent the player from feeling cheated when they buy something. $18 (realistically $20) is a lot to ask for one cosmetic item. As the game grows, is there any potential movement towards more affordable content across the board? People want to buy these things, but it's hard to justify it or feel good about it.”

Apex Legends‘ devs also admitted that their “director-level monetization guy” felt reluctant to join the AMA. Still, this director and Director of Communications rkrigney explained:

“We want to try and serve as many players as we can for sure so we're going to try things to learn what works. Going back to an earlier post, some tech debt we're paying off impacts this too (in a positive way) and we're trying to get there.”

The director explained that there is a lot of unseen accounting and finances that players do not see. As the developers want to run Apex Legends for as long as they can, they need to earn money to support the game's services. The director also explained that Apex Legends is developed gameplay-first. This means that the developers work on gameplay elements first and only use their extra time working on the skins and cosmetics. Hence, the developers actually need to spend extra time working to make skins and cosmetics. The upkeep needed to keep the developers, along with the designers of the Apex Legends skins and cosmetics, need to be compensated by the expensive skins.

Some players found the response as a “non-answer,” while some have been more understanding. Either way, we just wish that Apex Legends skins can be less expensive.
