The MLB has levied penalties against the Houston Astros for their 2017 cheating scandal, and they are heavy.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic, the league has suspended Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch one year for their roles in the club illegally stealing signs during their World Series championship campaign three seasons ago.

The punishment didn't stop there, however.

The Astros were also fined $5 million and were stripped of first and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. In addition, former Houston assistant general manager Brandon Taubman was placed on baseball's ineligible list. There will also be punishment for Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was an Astros bench coach in 2017.

It was reported back in November that in 2017, the Astros had been stealing signs at home games with a center-field camera. The bench then relayed those signs to hitters by banging on trash cans, which can be heard in some videos.

During the Winter Meetings last month, commissioner Rob Manfred said that “this is probably the most thorough investigation that the commissioner’s office has ever undertaken.”

Manfred added that the MLB had to review 76,000 e-mails as well as messages from other communication platforms.

The 2017 Astros won 101 games and captured the American League West title on the strength of a strong starting rotation that included Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel.

Houston then went on to defeat the Boston Red Sox in the AL Division Series before topping the New York Yankees in a thrilling ALCS. The Astros then topped the Los Angeles Dodgers in a seven-game World Series.

Houston has won 100 games each of the last three years, making two trips to the World Series. The Astros lost to the Washington Nationals in a seven-game Fall Classic in October.
