The Houston Astros have activated right-hander Brad Peacock ahead of Sunday afternoon's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Peacock told Jake Kaplan of The Athleticthat he is likely to make a relief appearance:

Peacock has not pitched since Aug. 27, when he was sent to the injured list with right shoulder soreness. Peacock has now had multiple stints on the IL after missing all of July and nearly all of August due to shoulder inflammation.

Though the Astros continue to rampage toward the top overall seed in the American League bracket, the pitching staff has been somewhat of a concern.

Of course, both Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole have been utterly dominant, and Zack Greinke has been a proven No. 3 starter in the rotation. However, there is not a whole lot of depth after that three-headed monster.

Wade Miley had been extremely effective for the first five months of the season, but he has suffered through a horrific September in which he has a 22.09 ERA and 3.818 WHIP in four starts. Meanwhile, Jose Urquidy and Framber Valdez have hardly been reliable at the back end of the rotation.

Though Peacock will make his return in the bullpen, the Astros might hope that they can stretch him out for the postseason. When healthy, Peacock has showcased some dominant stuff in 15 starts this year.

Particularly given Miley's struggles and the fact that Collin McHugh and Aaron Sanchez will miss the remainder of the season, Brad Peacock is the likeliest candidate to earn a starting spot come October, if he does not experience any setbacks.
