The Colorado Avalanche are fresh off winning a Stanley Cup in the 2021-22 season. If they want to win again next season, though, they are going to need to put in the work this offseason to ensure their roster stays in tip-top shape.

The first moves were made shortly after NHL free agency opened up this afternoon. Key depth pieces Josh Manson and Darren Helm were quickly re-signed, showing that the Avalanche aren't content with winning the Stanley Cup last season. They want to be repeat champs, and bringing back two pieces of their lower lines, while not the splashiest moves, certainly will help.

Manson was picked up midway through the season for the Avs last year, and ended up spending most of his time on Colorado's second defensive unit with Samuel Girard. Manson tallied eight points throughout the playoffs, and was a key piece in their penalty-killing efforts. His solid play earned him a long-term deal with the Avs that should see him be part of their defense for the foreseeable future.

Helm on the other hand made his way to the Avalanche last offseason after spending the first 14 seasons of his career with the Detroit Red Wings. Helm spent most of his time on the fourth-line on offense, and chipped in five points throughout the postseason. His contributions aren't what they once were, but his experience helped mightily for much of the season.

The main goal for Colorado is going to be reaching an extension with star center Nathan MacKinnon. But without keeping their depth players like Manson and Helm around too, the Avalanche are going to struggle to repeat next season. It may not seem like it on the surface, but Colorado got off to a great start in free agency by re-signing both Manson and Helm.
