The Colorado Avalanche are looking to claim their first Stanley Cup title since the late 1990's when Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg dominated the NHL. This season's version of the Avalanche is once again dominating the league. Colorado has won six straight games and is tied with the Florida Panthers for the most points in the NHL with 110. Clearly, the franchise's present is pretty bright. As it turns out, so is their future.

As The Athletic's Michael Russo put it, the Avalanche have won the Ben Meyers sweepstakes. Meyers was a Hobey Baker Award finalist at the University of Minnesota last season. The award is given to the nation's best college hockey player.

The former Big Ten Player of the Year signed a two-year contract with the Avalanche. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet. Nevertheless, Colorado was already looking like a force for years to come. Now, they simply added to their youth and talent pool.

Meyers led the Minnesota Gofers with 41 points (17 goals and 24 assists) and five game-winning goals in 34 games this season. Sadly for Meyers, his Gofers lost in the NCAA Frozen Four to their inter-state rival Minnesota State, 5-1.

The Avalanche are getting a quick, 5′ 11”, 210 pound forward with a scoring prowess. Meyers was a member of the United States men's olympic hockey team. He scored two goals and two assists in his four games played in the Olympics.

Colorado already has one of the most potent offenses in the game. Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon already make up a strong trio. Neither of them are even 30-years-old yet. The future is certainly bright in Colorado.
