ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, the feted media personality and a bona fide national treasure in the sphere of sports “takesmanship,” is well known for his wild rants and amusing hysterics when it comes to getting his opinions across.

The star of ESPN’s supremely popular First Take, Smith has been known to explode with controlled fury to help drive his points home – often coming alongside a gloriously gritty voice.

The most recent Bad Boys film starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is set to be release around the country, and everyone’s favorite sports talking head seemingly believed himself to be a good option for the role of the police captain in the film.

As such, Stephen A. produced this audition tape with the two actors:

As you can see, neither Will Smith nor Martin Lawrence believed Stephen A. to be a good captain due to his inability to convey his emotions in a threatening manner. But frankly, what were they watching?

Clearly though, Stephen A. was the only member of the three people in the video who was putting forth much effort in his acting. In fact, the sports pundit was easily the most believable character in the video – which features a two-time Academy Award nominee in Will Smith.

Sure, there must’ve been something in the contract of Will Smith and Lawrence to make it seem as if their foil in this promotional video was not worthy of being their captain in the new film. However, they must not have realized that Stephen A. has legitimate acting chops that are on full display every day on First Take.

Bad Boys for Life releases on Jan. 16 worldwide, though it sadly will not star Stephen A. Smith as a police captain. Their loss.
