The Wisconsin Badgers got an early taste of the craziness of March when they got tripped up by the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a 74-73 home loss on Sunday. The loss was Wisconsin’s first in five games, but what’s more concerning for the Badgers is the status of sophomore guard Johnny Davis.

Davis suffered an upper-body injury with over 17 minutes remaining in regulation when he got fouled by Cornhuskers junior forward Trey McGowens. Davis would not return to the game after that, which isn’t a good sign for the Badgers heading into the Big Ten conference tournament, but Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard did not seem too worried about it when he spoke to reporters following the contest.

Via ESPN:

“I'm optimistic that he's going to be fine,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said, without elaborating further on Davis' injury.

“The officials knew my thoughts, and knew them actually before it happened on some other things that I saw. I'll leave it at that and I'll watch the replay and I'll make the necessary phone calls,” Gard said.

Davis is the Badgers’ best player, leading the team in both points (20.0 PPG) and rebounds (8.1 RPG). With the Badgers virtually assured of a spot in the Big Dance, they could opt to roll in the conference tournament with Davis taking a rest.

The Badgers won’t play again until Thursday, thanks to their byes in the first two rounds of the Big Ten tourney. They will face the winner of the second-round meeting between the Michigan State Spartans and the Maryland Terrapins in the quarterfinals stage on Friday.
