You can now add your friends to your friends list on Battle.net, regardless of which servers you are in. The Battle.net launcher received a massive update, which they announced with a blog post earlier today. “We’ve always envisioned Battle.net as a place for players to connect, collaborate, and play their favorite games,” Blizzard writes. “Now, we’re realizing that dream on a truly global level.”

To make room for this change, the Battle.net friends list has been reworked. Your friends lists across your different region accounts will be merged into one. That means you'll have the same friends list regardless of which region you logged yourself into. This will help you find out easily which server your friends are playing at any time. However, this doesn't mean that you can hop in on a friend's game in a different region. Games and progression will remain tied to the region you're playing in.

Blizzard described the task as a monumental task. “Breaking down these barriers was a significant engineering task,” says Jeff Allison, Lead Product Manager for Battle.net. “Now that we’ve done it, we look forward to a future where all Battle.net players can communicate and game together no matter where they are.”

Given how hard it was for Blizzard to add inter-regional chat and friends list on Battle.net, we can only surmise that cross-region play and progress across their games will be even a more colossal challenge. But we remain optimistic that Blizzard can add that feature in the future, someday. Things can always change, just as how Overwatch will soon be getting Cross-Play.
