Battlefield 2042‘s official reveal trailer has finally landed earlier today, and it did not disappoint. The new Battlefield game seems awesome, and the reveal trailer confirmed some things we've been talking about in the past few months. The game, which releases on October 22, 2021, will continue Battlefield‘s fantastic multiplayer game modes. However, the game will not feature a Battle Royale Mode, in spite of earlier rumors.

Battle Royale has become the top gaming trend over the past half-decade. The trend started with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which was then refined and perfected by games like Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone. A lot of different developers and publishers decided that they wanted a part of the Battle Royale Market Pie, but some have been less successful than others. It's very tempting to get into the trend, but Battlefield 2042 developers DICE decided against it.

The direction DICE wants to take Battlefield 2042 towards isn't exemplified by the Battle Royale genre. In an interview with The Washington Post, Game Director Oskar Gabrielson shared: “The first thing we said is, okay, we’re going to reimagine all-out warfare. Up the player count, up to everything else to really deliver that kind of high scale, epic warfare experience… We came around with this idea that we’re calling Hazard Zone, which is a squad-based, high-tension mode, a really kind of contemporary design. It’s not your classic battle royale, and it’s something we’re going to show more about in the next couple of months. … It’ll feel real ‘Battlefield’ when you see it.”
