DICE recently concluded an “Answering Your Reveal Questions” showcase. There, Battlefield 2042 senior design director Daniel Berlin detailed what we can expect from the upcoming shooter.

Online-Only and Cross-Play

They confirmed that Battlefield 2042 is a multiplayer-only experience. Adding, “while you can play Solo against AI Soldiers if you’d like to practice, it will be in an online setting.” They also briefly discussed the possibility of cross-play, and confirmed that it is a function they're looking to build for the game. DICE will be holding a technical playtest later this summer. They also mentioned that they're looking to implement cross-progression. This means your unlocked progress and purchases will carry over across all versions of the game you own.

Specialists and Customizable Loadouts

Specialists are a new type of playable soldier. They were inspired by traditional Battlefield classes. Each comes with their own unique trait and specialty, which cannot be changed. 10 Specialists will be available at launch. Berlin also confirmed cosmetic customization options, such as skins, will be coming to the game.

Additionally, the incoming customizable loadouts feature will let you set:

  • Primary Weapon
  • Equipment (items anyone can use such as a Medical Crate or Supply Crate)
  • Secondary Weapon
  • Throwable (such as Frag or Incendiary Grenade)

Battlefield 2042 squads will support a maximum of 4 players. In Conquest and Breakthrough modes, they can bring in more than one unique Specialist.

Battlefield 2042 Maps and Vehicles

A section of the official website has also been dedicated to maps. 7 maps are confirmed to be available at launch. Berlin also mentioned that “this is the biggest and boldest Battlefield we have ever built.” They have also mentioned that different game modes will be using different areas of their large maps.

Regarding vehicles, they will be “more easily available and more squad focused than ever before.” The game will also be implementing a vehicle call-in system, but these will be dependent on the map and game mode. They will also have a specific budget and operate on a cooldown. Some vehicles will also remain faction-specific.
