Bayern Munich star and Canada international Alphonso Davies will miss the entirety of the CONCACAF Gold Cup after he suffered an injury in training, the team announced on Friday.

This an absolutely massive blow to Canada's hopes in the competition, where they will be looking to make some noise amongst the likes of Mexico and the US. Alphonso Davies is by far their best player and without him on the pitch, it's going to be very tough for John Herdman's side to make an impression in the Gold Cup.

The former Whitecaps star is dealing with an ankle injury that he picked up earlier this week and will now head back to Germany to start his recovery ahead of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign with Bayern. Alphonso Davies was preparing for his third Gold Cup after starring in 2017 and 2019 while helping Canada progress all the way to the quarterfinals. Along the way, he was even named the top young player in the tournament back in 2017.

In six appearances for the Canadian national team this year, Alphonso Davies has bagged four goals and tallied a team-best five assists. Not bad for a player who generally operates as a wing-back for his club.

Best of luck to Davies as he rehabs the ankle.
