The Chicago Bears do not need a starting quarterback, as Mitchell Trubisky has that spot on lock. However, every team needs a backup signal-caller, and the Bears feel they have a reliable one in Chase Daniel.

That's why Chicago might be aiming to get a contract extension done with Daniel this offseason, according to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune.

“Those are the internal conversations that we’re always having,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said Wednesday morning at the NFL scouting combine. “And I think we’re always being mindful, too, of potential extensions down the road.”

Not only would extending Daniel solidify the Bears' backup quarterback situation, but it would also open up some cap space. Chicago can do that by taking some of Daniel's $6 million salary next year in to bonus money and add additional years to his deal.

“We expect Chase to be a Bear for a long time,” Pace said.

Daniel appeared in five games this past season and actually made a couple of starts, throwing for 515 yards, three touchdowns, and a couple of interceptions while completing 69.7 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 90.6.

The 32-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Missouri, went undrafted but ended up landing with the New Orleans Saints for the 2010 campaign. He spent the first three seasons of his career with the Saints before making his way to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played three years.

Daniel then spent one year with the Philadelphia Eagles and then returned to New Orleans in 2017 before finally joining Chicago.
