The Chicago Bears are well-aware they must shore up more backfield depth this offseason. Regardless, it does not seem as though general manager Ryan Pace will be making it a priority in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Bears are currently slated to make their first pick in the third round o the upcoming draft. According toRich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, Pace indicated that Chicago will be looking for the best player on the board at that point:

“There’s no pressing, huge need. We can honestly pick the best player available,” Pace said.

The Bears parted ways with former workhorse back Jordan Howard in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. They managed to sign former Seattle Seahawks running back Mike Davis in free agency and have high hopes that he can etch out an integral role moving forward. They also former New England Patriots wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and have not ruled out the idea of him serving as a change-of-pace option in the backfield as well.

For now, it appears running back Tarik Cohen will be the featured option in Chicago's offense. There is no question that has earned the right to more touches, however, the Bears may have precautions about putting too much wear and tear on the pint-sized playmaker. Besides, his versatile skill set is much better served in passing situations and on special teams. Perhaps the front office is hoping that the best player available with the 87th overall pick will be a running back.
