Much of the world was just as shocked as the Indianapolis Colts when Josh McDaniels suddenly decided to reject the Colts and remain with the New England Patriots. But the entire world wasn’t shocked. There were some that didn’t necessarily see McDaniels pulling out at the last minute, but they knew he’d have trouble leaving the Patriots.

At least, that’s one of the reasons why the Chicago Bears didn’t hire him.

According to Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times, after the Bears interviewed McDaniels they left with reservations he would be willing to leave New England. With that sense of uncertainty and having to wait until after the playoffs were over, the Bears didn’t feel good about hiring him.

So rather than tempt fate, they went after and locked up Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, instead.

If there is any team that can understand what the Colts are going through, it’s the Chicago Bears. They had a similar situation develop back in 1999 with Dave McGinnis. The Bears announced him as their next head coach but forget a tiny little detail. They had yet to offer him the job officially.

“It’s not really the same,” McGinnis told the Talk of Fame Network (via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk). “I was never offered a contract. I was announced as the head coach before I had even been offered the job…. “

McGinnis ended up walking away and became head coach of the Arizona Cardinals the following year.

The world assumes that the Patriots have made a sweetheart deal of some kind with McDaniels; that when Belichick retires, he’s next in line. That could be the only way McDaniels ever gets another chance to become a head coach.

After the trouble he’s caused the Colts, no one is going to be want to risk becoming his next victim.
