Chicago Bears tight end Trey Burton is preparing for another season, but after a scheduled day off last week, Burton missed three training camp sessions in total.

As he continues to rehab from a sports hernia surgery, the tight end seems to be playing things safe, and according to the team itself, they’re looking to keep him protected at all costs.

“It’s not a setback,” Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy said via Pro Football Talk. “It’s, more of, for us, I’m trying to protect him a little bit. I need him and we need him 100 percent for Week One.”

Burton wasn’t placed on the physically unable to perform list, so he won’t need to avoid training camp altogether, but his recent string of absences had some thinking that he was suffering from a setback. However, it seems as if Burton is fine and the team is simply trying to do what is best for their player.

Currently, there is no timeline for when Burton will return to practice, which also makes it unlikely he’ll play in the Bears Thursday preseason game. With his lack of camp appearance so far, it could also mean that the Bears simply allow Burton to sit out until their season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

After coming to Chicago from Philadelphia, Burton posted career highs in nearly every stat, including receptions (54), yards, (569), and touchdowns (6).

After becoming a favorite target of Mitchell Trubisky’s, he’ll look to continue that upward trajectory as the Bears aim for a Super Bowl run.
