The Chicago Bears are hiring Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to replace Matt Nagy as head coach, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Bears selected Eberflus over Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and former NFL head coach Jim Caldwell. Chicago just hired Ryan Poles to replace Ryan Pace as general manager, and Poles interviewed the three finalists this week before landing on Eberflus.

This means the Bears are going from Ryan and Matt to Ryan and Matt as their general manager and head coach, respectively. Chicago is certainly hoping this iteration of the Ryan and Matt duo will have more success. The Bears went to the playoffs twice in the last four seasons since the hiring of Nagy but failed to advance both times. Chicago notched a 6-11 record in 2021, resulting in the firings of Pace and Nagy.

Eberflus was hired as Colts defensive coordinator in 2018. He oversaw one of the better defenses in the NFL over the past few seasons, including a group that ranked ninth in points allowed in 2021.

With Eberflus now in place as head coach, everybody wants to know who he'll bring along as offensive coordinator. The most important thing for the Bears is developing young quarterback Justin Fields, who struggled through a tough rookie season under Nagy. Given Eberflus is a defensive guy, he needs to have a top-notch offensive mind at his side to get the most out of Fields.
