The 2019 NFL season was definitely one to forget for Mitch Trubisky and the Chicago Bears. John DeFilippo, the new quarterbacks coach for the Bears, revealed what he told Trubisky following his dismal season in 2019:

“I told him he needed to get away, man,” DeFilippo said, via Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune. “I said, ‘Bro, you had a rough season. Like from a mental standpoint. (From a) physical standpoint, you’ve got a shoulder you need to rehab. But you need to go clear your mind for a few weeks.’

Back in 2018, Trubisky and the Bears saw flashes of success on the offensive side of the ball. The former No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft would throw for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2018.

Even though there was still skepticism surrounding Trubisky, Chicago had something to work off of. However, in his third season, Trubisky would massively regress, throwing for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Above all, the Bears would miss the postseason after posting a 12-4 record in 2018. In addition to that, Chicago would go from having the No. 9 ranked scoring offense in 2018, to having the No. 29 ranked scoring offense in 2019.

Earlier this offseason, in an attempt to light a fire under Trubisky, the Bears acquired veteran Nick Foles via trade. Given his previous experience with head coach Matt Nagy, Foles is the favorite to win the starting job.

With that being said, DeFilippo and the coaching staff in Chicago are hoping to see a new version of Trubisky in 2020. Before Trubisky began looking forward to next season, DeFilippo informed the struggling quarterback to take some time off and regroup this offseason.
