The Chicago Bears didn't wait too long. Not long after cutting Cody Parkey, the Bears signed a new kicker today. The team is adding former Pittsburgh kick Chris Blewitt, according to Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Briggs reports that the Bears had a group tryout at their facility, and that Blewitt “emerged from the pack.” Blewitt has been around for a while, but has never made an NFL roster. He went undrafted in 2017, and was with the Steelers during the offseason. He's remained a free agent ever since, and was finally able to land another job.

Parkey, of course, infamously missed a last-second field goal that would've given the Bears a playoff win over the Eagles in the first round of the playoffs. After shanking the kick, Parkey then went on Good Morning America and made the problem a lot worse. Coaches and teammates were irate at Parkey's decision to go on television so soon after the game, and he was cut shortly after.

The Bears had the best defense in the league last year and an extremely talented roster overall, but the kicking game was a weakness for them all year long. Even before the playoff game that will go down in history, Parkey had been missing kicks. Blewitt made just 10 of 17 field goals during his senior season at Pitt, so this signing is a bit out of left field. Blewitt certainly won't be given the job this early, but it looks like he'll at least have the opportunity to compete for it in training camp.
