The Chicago Bears managed to secure an early lead against the New York Giants in Week 2. unfortunately, they have suffered a notable injury with running back David Montgomery sidelined.

Montgomery was forced to exit the game with an apparent neck injury, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport:

Montgomery had gotten off to a solid start against New York after rushing for 23 yards on five carries while hauling in a 28-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Unfortunately, this offense is now left without one of its premier playmakers.

Montgomery is not the only talented, young running back to leave the game due to injury after Saquon Barkley suffered a knee injury. With a number of teams already getting bit by the injury bug throughout the league, many have speculated whether or not it could be attributed to the unprecedented circumstances of the offseason due to coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Chicago had high expectations for Montgomery coming into the 2020 NFL season following an impressive rookie campaign. The former third round pick was slated to resume his role as the workhorse on early downs while running back Tarik Cohen served as a complementary option on passing downs. The team is now holding their breath as they determine the severity of the injury.

The Bears will now be relying on a combination of Cohen and utility man Cordarrelle Patterson to carry the run game in Montgomery's absence. Fortunately, Patterson is certainly no stranger to filling in at running back and his versatile skill set should help serve as a stabilizing factor.
