All signs were pointing toward a breakout year for Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery. Unfortunately, the team is now holding their breath following a recent setback at training camp.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Montgomery suffered a groin injury and is undergoing further testing.

Here's the video of the injury:

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the team is optimistic that the injury is not too serious.

Although the nature of his injury occurring without any contact was hardly an encouraging sign, it appears the Bears managed to dodge a bullet. It now remains to be seen other or not he will miss significant time with the 2020 NFL season just weeks away.

Montgomery served as one of the few bright spots of a disappointing 2019 campaign for the Bears by rushing for 889 yards and six touchdowns while tacking on 25 receptions for 185 yards and one touchdown. His emergence as a budding workhorse led to plenty of hype about a potential leap in Year 2 for the former third-round pick.

Montgomery's potential absence would open up plenty of touches for this makeshift backfield in Chicago. Pint-sized running back Tarik Cohen has largely served as a complementary option thanks to his versatile skill set. Meanwhile, wide receiver/ kickoff returner Cordarrelle Patterson has also proven more than capable of lining up at running back.

Undrafted free-agent running backs Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce should also see some more reps in practice for the time being.
