The Chicago Bears' offense will be held under a microscope this season. The development of Justin Fields is imperative for their future yet the front office has not surrounded him with much help.

Fields had a rocky rookie season after being taken 11th overall by the Bears, throwing for just 1,870 yards, 10 interceptions and seven touchdowns. Although he also rushed for 420 yards and two touchdowns, he has a lot to prove. The cast he has to help him prove it is mostly uninspiring, though, aside from wide receiver Darnell Mooney.

According to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Fields wasn't shy about the work that the Bears still have to do this offseason. He stated clearly that they aren't ready to play.

“I’m not ready for the season to start…I’m the type of guy that would like to know I’m prepared. So, right now, I’m just being honest. We’re not ready to play a game right now. And when that time comes, we will be ready. So, right now, no — not ready to play a game.”

Fields' reality check isn't too surprising given that it is still June. He explained that the Bears are doing a lot of work with the new playbook under their new first-year coaches, Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

They’re pretty much throwing the whole playbook at us — which is good right now, but, of course, there are going to be mistakes. But we’d rather have the mistakes come right now than later in the fall or [training] camp.”

The Bears, despite being the oldest team in the NFL, have never had a passer with 4,000 yards in a single season. If they want Justin Fields to be the first, they have to find him a stronger supporting cast.
