The Chicago Bears have signed newly-acquired defensive end Khalil Mack to a record-setting six-year, $141 million extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Mack, who just arrived in Chicago after a blockbuster trade with the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, is now the new highest paid defensive player in NFL history. His deal, which averages $23.5 million per season and includes $90 million in guaranteed money, eclipses the $135 million deal ($87 million guaranteed) Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald signed the day before.

The Bears paid a huge price in the trade for Mack as they gave up first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a third-round pick in 2020 and a sixth-round pick in 2019. But in trading for Mack, the Bears signaled their intent to do what the Raiders weren't willing to, which was to hand over a massive long-term contract to the star defender.

With Mack locked up to a long-term deal, the Bears will now look forward to having one of the more impressive linebacking corps in the league for the next few years.

Mack will start alongside promising young pass rusher Leonard Floyd on the outside for the Bears. Floyd, a former top-10 pick, has had injury issues over his first two seasons in the league, but has shown flashes of being a top pass rusher. Meanwhile, veteran Danny Trevathan will partner rookie Roquan Smith, who was their top-10 pick this year, on the inside.

After committing all those valuable resources to Mack, the Bears will be hoping that Mack-led defense will emerge as one of the best in the league as soon as this season.
