The Chicago Bears offense hardly inspired any confidence in the 2019 NFL season in their opener against the Green Bay Packers. Regardless, former Bears running back Matt Forte likes what he sees in running back David Montgomery.

Montgomery did not get very many opportunities to show off his skill set versus Green Bay. According to Alyssa Barbieri of the Bears Wire, Forte is intrigues by the rookie's skill set:

“I like David Montgomery as a rookie because I see his vision and his patience out there, and that’s uncommon in rookie running backs,” Forte explained. “And that’s really important as a running back to have that patience and vision so that you can set up blocks. But he is also elusive, and that’s an underrated accessory to have, as well, as a running back. I think he can break tackles and be elusive and make some plays out there.”

The Bears have a long history of boasting some of the most talented running backs in the NFL. Forte certainly did his part to keep the tradition going during his time in Chicago. It seems he is confident in Montgomery's ability to carry the torch.

The third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft showed plenty of promise during training camp and the preseason. Although he only took seven touches for 45 yards in his professional debut, head coach Matt Nagy acknowledged that he will see his workload increase from here on out.

Despite the small sample size, it is clear that Montgomery has managed to turn heads so far in Chicago. Forte is looking forward to the day he takes over as the clear-cut workhorse back.
