Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette has hit the open market after clearing waivers. With Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery nursing a groin injury, there was some speculation regarding their potential interest.

According to Adam Jahns of The Athletic, head coach Matt Nagy is content with the status of the backfield:

“I'll just say we really like where we're at right now with our running back room.”

Nagy certainly has good reason to be confident given the promise Montgomery showed as a potential workhorse during his rookie year. The setback with the groin injury is expected to only keep him out two to four weeks. As a result, Nagy will try to make do with the weapons at his disposal to open the 2020 NFL season.

Running back Tarik Cohen has largely served as a complementary option in the Bears' backfield thanks to his skill set as both a runner and receiver. However, the pint-sized playmaker is ill-equipped to shoulder the load on early downs. This means wide receiver/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson could be slated to show off his versatility once again at running back.

Patterson is certainly no stranger to showing off his chops at running back. Nagy's comments indicate that he is optimistic that this tandem can get the job done until Montgomery makes his return.

Although there have been a number of rumored landing spots for Fournette, it remains to be seen where he will ultimately land with the start of the 2020 campaign just over a week away.
