As Roquan Smith and the Chicago Bears try to make more progress towards a contract Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn't hold back on his comments about the rookie not being at camp.

“Obviously, it’s not advantageous to anybody that he’s not here, and I’ll just leave it at that,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said, via Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. “Talk to Ryan [Pace, the General Manager] and his salary-cap guys about that.”

There were two holds up in the contract negotiations with the first being language that would allow the Bears to void Smith's guaranteed money if he was suspended for a helmet to helmet hit. According to David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears have agreed to take that out of the language.

The second big hold up now is the contract being void if Smith were to run into some off the field issues. According to Haugh the hold up isn't about Smith having concerns about getting in trouble rather they don't want to set a precedent for future contracts.

The Bears’ reluctance to [include contract language that would protect Smith from discipline] revolves around their fear of setting a precedent for future contracts and has nothing to do with concerns about Smith’s character, the source said.

It will be interesting to see which side gives in first. There is no question the Bears are itching to get their first round pick on the field but there is no question that Smith doesn't want to sign a contract that has that type of language in it.
