Following the first Super Bowl win in franchise history, the Philadelphia Eagles were expected to undergo a few changes to the roster given their salary cap situation. One of these moves concerned veteran tight end Trey Burton possibly leaving via free agency this offseason.

There has been a growing notion that Burton would go elsewhere to cash in on his rising stock for an increased playing time and an opportunity to step in as a starter. According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, the 26-year-old has already found a new home in the NFL on Tuesday morning by reportedly agreeing to a four-year, $32 million deal to join the Chicago Bears.

This is a significant pay raise for Burton after completing a one-year, $2.7 million deal that was likely hard for him to pass on. It now puts him in the position to be a featured part of the Bears' offense headed by second-year quarterback Mitchell Turbisky that will also include former Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl wideout Allen Robinson joining the fray via free agency. Robinson has reportedly agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal with the team.

Burton is coming off a productive 2017 campaign despite being the third-string tight end recording  23 receptions on 30 targets for 248 receiving yards and a career-high five touchdowns. This includes seven games with multiple catches highlighted by his season-high five receptions for 71 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Los Angeles Rams. His biggest impact of the year came in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots on the “Philly Special” trick play where he tossed a touchdown pass on 4th and goal to quarterback Nick Foles late in the second quarter.

This latest signing is another indication that the Bears are committed to a building the offense around Turbisky in hopes of taking a significant step forward toward snapping their seven-year playoff drought. Chicago could add several more pieces to the puzzle through free agency with still possessing a significant amount of salary cap space.
