Chicago Bears tight end Trey Burton missed the team's season opener last Thursday due to a strained groin, but the Bears say he is day-to-day and are optimistic he will play in their Week 2 matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, according to Aaron Leming of WC Gridiron.
Burton is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played all 16 games during his first season in Chicago, hauling in 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns.
The Bears signed Burton to a four-year, $32 million contract in March 2018.
Burton, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, went undrafted but eventually landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in May 2014. He appeared in 15 contests that season, but did not log a catch.
The following year, Burton's role was similar, as he participated in every game but finished with just three catches for 54 yards.
It wasn't until 2016 when the 27-year-old finally began to develop a role within the Eagles' offense, catching 37 passes for 327 yards and a touchdown over 15 contests.
He followed that by playing in 15 games and snaring 23 balls for 248 yards and five scores for a Philadelphia team that went on to win its first ever Super Bowl.
Meanwhile, the Bears are looking to bounce back from an anemic Week 1 performance against the Green Bay Packers in which they scored just three points in a seven-point loss at Soldier Field.
Chicago won 12 games and captured the NFC North division title last year and is looking to make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign.
