The Chicago Bears have navigated through training camp and the preseason largely without the services of tight end Trey Burton. Fortunately, he appears to be on track for the start of the 2019 NFL season.

Burton spent the offseason recovering from a sports hernia that sidelined him during the playoffs last year. According to Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, head coach Matt Nagy is confident he will be available Week 1 versus the Green Bay Packers:

“I’m excited for him for Sept. 5. He’ll be ready, he’ll be ready to go… The mental part’s easy for him. It’s more so the physicality and getting your body used to running around.”

The is certainly an encouraging update for the Bears. Burton arrived as one of their most notable signings following a successful Super Bowl run with the Philadelphia Eagles. He followed it up by finishing the 2018 campaign with 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns.

Burton's absence was heavily felt against his former team in the playoffs last year. Regardless, expectations are now as high as ever heading into the season opener versus Green Bay. He is slated to resume his integral role on the offensive side of the ball so long as he can remain healthy for what Chicago hopes to be a long season.

Week 3 of the preseason is seen as somewhat of a tune-up match for many teams around the league.

Regardless, it is safe to assume that Burton will continue to watch the final games from the sideline before the real test begins.
