It’s clear that the Chicago Bears are looking to head into a new direction after firing coach Matt Nagy. The team had a disappointing campaign, finishing with a 6-11 win-loss card and failing to advance to the NFL Playoffs.

While finding someone to replace Nagy should be the Bears’ top priority, making sure that rookie quarterback Justin Fields will be in it for the long term should also be a focal agenda.

But according to a column of The Athletic’s Mike Sando, one NFL coach who refused to be named claimed that the Bears could let go of Fields. He said, quite strangely, this would make the roster more appealing for the new coach.

“From a roster construction standpoint, Chicago is a very desirable location if you ask me, including the fact that you could possibly trade (Justin) Fields.”

Sando, however, also noted that the Bears still need a lot to address in the offseason.

The Bears changed their structure so the next GM will report directly to ownership instead of through team president Ted Phillips, but one exec suggested there are zero guarantees the situation would function that way practically. Another called Chicago’s ownership “low-end neutral” while noting that the Bears “are just kind of there” and distanced from their tradition.

The 22-year-old Fields, who was drafted 11th overall by the Bears, had an up-and-down campaign. In 12 games, he finished with 1,870 yards passing, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 12 games.

The Bears QB already vowed that “his best is yet to come.”
