The Cincinnati Bengals have released linebacker Preston Brown, according to Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

In nine games with the Bengals this season, Brown logged 52 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, but he struggled in pass coverage.

Brown, who played his collegiate football at the University of Louisville, was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills in the third round (73rd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games during his rookie year, finishing with 109 tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. He followed that up with a similar season in 2015, totaling 117 tackles, a couple of picks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown.

The 27-year-old then showed more improvement in 2016, racking up 135 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery before leading the league with 144 tackles in 2017.

Brown went on to sign a one-year deal with the Bengals in March 2018, but injuries limited him to just seven games during his first season with the club. During the time he was on the field, he posted 42 stops, a pair of interceptions and four passes defended.

Cincinnati is an NFL-worst 0-9 this season and is coming off of a 49-13 loss at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bengals' defense has been an issue for quite some time now, and this season, things have reached a boiling point.

Cincinnati is set to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year, which comes on the heels of five straight postseason appearances between 2011 and 2015, all of which ended in Wild Card Round exits.
