Joe Mixon has become a key contributor for the Cincinnati Bengals over the past three seasons. Ahead of the final year of his contract, Bengals director of player personnel, Duke Tobin, said that the team has begun to speak to Mixon on a contract extension this offseason.

While speaking to Lance McAlister of 700 WLW, Tobin revealed the Bengals' approach to Mixon's extension:

“Joe’s obviously a guy that’s shown a lot of ability,” Tobin said to Lance McAlister of 700 WLW. “He’s in a year that he can be extended, and he is a guy that we visited with. We’ll go through those discussions and see if there is a fit or a match for a long-term contract with him, obviously a guy we value quite a bit. The great thing about Joe is he goes about it the right way . . . He’s the type of guy you want to lock up to a long-term deal. We’ll see if we can find the commonality to get that done over time here.”

Over the past two years alone, Mixon has been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL despite playing on a dismal roster with the Bengals. Altogether, the former second-round pick has accumulated 2,888 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns since 2018.

In today's NFL, running backs aren't viewed as valuable weapons unless they can be a threat as a runner and receiver. Seeing that Mixon is capable as a pass-catcher, he could garner a decent extension from the Bengals.

Of course, it's overzealous to believe that Mixon could receive a contract in the same ballpark as Christian McCaffrey's recent extension. With that being said, Cincinnati plans on keeping Mixon with the franchise for years to come.
