Now three years into his NFL career, Joe Mixon is eager to get a contract extension done with the only franchise he has ever called home. The Cincinnati Bengals running back is eligible to work out a new deal this offseason, and he hopes the two sides can at least begin negotiations.

“I want to be a Bengal for life,” Mixon said, according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I haven’t really thought about an extension. Right now is definitely the time to start getting into it. I don’t know much about the extension part. I just have to go in and hopefully we work something out. I just wish for the best. The ball is in their court, not mine.”

Mixon played in every game this season, registering 1,137 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry. In addition, he logged 35 catches for 287 yards and three scores.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, was originally selected by the Bengals in the second round (48th pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 14 contests during his rookie campaign, finishing with 626 yards and four touchdowns on the ground while recording 3.5 yards per attempt. He also caught 30 passes for 287 yards.

Mixon then broke out during his sophomore year, racking up 1,168 yards while reaching the end zone eight times as a rusher, posting 4.9 yards per tote. On top of that, he hauled in 43 receptions for 296 yards and a touchdown.

The Bengals went just 2-14 this season and have been miserable ever since Mixon arrived, but that has not stopped the Oakley, Ca. native from wanting to remain in Cincinnati long term.
