The Cincinnati Bengals just suffered a heartbreaking Super Bowl 56 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. With the season now over, one of Zac Taylor's assistant coaches is jumping to college to take on an important role at Notre Dame.

That would be Al Golden, who's leaving his post as Bengals linebackers coach to be the defensive coordinator for Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame, according to Tom Loy of Irish Illustrated.

Golden has extensive experience coaching in college, including head coaching stints with Temple and Miami. He jumped to the NFL after getting fired by Miami in 2015, signing up with the Detroit Lions as a tight ends coach in 2016 and then becoming the linebackers coach in 2018.

Golden was fired by the Lions in 2019 but soon got another gig as the Bengals' linebackers coach in 2020. He then spent two seasons in Cincinnati on Taylor's staff before now making this move back to college with Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish hired Freeman from within after Brian Kelly bolted South Bend for LSU. Golden does have defensive coordinator experience, holding that title for Virginia back in the early 2000s. The expectations will be high for Golden, who interviewed for the Notre Dame gig between the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl.

Golden helped coach a Bengals defense that consistently came up big in the playoffs, until the very last drive that saw the Rams go on a long march to win. Still, the group showed a lot of adversity, and Notre Dame is looking forward to bringing Golden aboard.
