The Cincinnati Bengals suffered a crucial blow with the injury to wide receiver AJ Green to start training camp. As a result, offensive coordinator Brian Callahan has gotten a head start on a different approach.

Green's presence would have initially allowed Cincinnati to work out of an 11 personnel alignment on offense, as the team wants to. According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Brian Callahan admits the Bengals may have to rely more on their tight ends and other wideouts:

“We want to be an 11 personnel team, that’s not really a secret,” Callahan said. “We do have a really good tight end group. We have done plenty of 12, we will do plenty of 12. You are going to see it out there. At some point maybe we go 13, nothing is off the table in terms of getting the game plan together that gives us the best chance to win.”

It certainly makes sense for Brian Callahan to start gearing the offense around the team's strengths. With Green gone, the Bengals no longer have a bonafide No. 1 wideout to take advantage of. Fortunately, they appear to be confident in their depth at tight end.

The Bengals invested a second-round pick to pair tight end Drew Sample with Tyler Eifert this offseason. Meanwhile, tight end C.J. Uzomah showed plenty of promise down the stretch in the 2018 campaign in place of an injured Eifert. They all could get a decent amount of snaps to start the season while AJ Green works his way back from injury.
