Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross’ first year in the pros came to a close Wednesday, as the team put their first-round pick in this year’s draft on the injured reserved list due to a left shoulder injury, meaning he’ll not play another game this season. This report came from the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Jim Owczarski.

Moreover, Owczarski said that Ross is set to go under the knife to repair the injury, though the Bengals are yet to set a date for the procedure. This would be the second surgery Ross has undergone to fix his shoulder. Before being selected by the Bengals, Ross’ underwent a labrum surgery on his right shoulder which caused him to miss the first week of this season.

Ross has been one of the biggest rookie disappointments this season due to his health issues and his struggles on the field. He debuted in a Week 2 matchup against the Houston Texans, appearing in just five snaps. He then missed the Bengals’ next four games before playing again in Week 8 against the Indianapolis Colts. He hasn't played since Week 10 against the Tennessee Titans, when he did not make an impact in the six snaps he played.

All told, Ross played in just three games this season, recording zero receiving yards on two targets and just 12 rushing yards on one carry.

With Ross on the IR, the Bengals filled the free spot on their roster by signing defensive tackle Josh Tupuo to the 53-man roster. Tupuo went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft but was signed by Cincy later on. The Bengals previously signed the former Colorado Buffaloes wideout to their 53-man active roster, but he was waived on Nov. 21 before the team hooked him up to its practice squad the day after.
