Andy Dalton has been a polarizing figure during his time as quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, but new Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has no issue with Dalton under center.

“I think it’s important every backup in our building is competing for a job,” Taylor said, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “I think Andy has a really bright future in what we are going to do. He’s had a great career. I’ve always watched him from afar. I have never really interacted with him until I got this job.”

There has been some talk that the Bengals should bring in another signal-caller to compete with Dalton for the starting job, but Taylor seems pretty committed to Dalton for the 2019 season:

“Andy is going to be very successful,” added Taylor. “He fits what we want to do. He’s smart. He gets the ball out on time. He’s accurate. He understands what the defenses are presenting to him. So I’m excited to get a chance to work with him. He’s going to have a bright future here.”

Dalton is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he was limited to just 11 games due to a thumb injury. Over that time, he threw for 2,566 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 61.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 89.6.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at TCU, was originally selected by Cincinnati in the second round (35th pick overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He has been the Bengals' starting quarterback ever since, making three Pro Bowls along the way.
